About Us

Shell UK and Ireland’s Upstream legal team is based in Aberdeen, UK and headed by Shell UK and Ireland’s Managing Counsel Upstream. The team covers a wide variety of work relating to Shell UK and Ireland’s Upstream business including joint venture, project development, regulatory, M&A, gas sales/transportation and exploration.

About the position and requirements:

The position is to act as a legal counsel within Shell UK and Ireland’s Upstream legal team in Aberdeen providing professional, timely, cost-effective and practical legal advice and support to the Upstream UK and Ireland business and working as a credible and strategic business partner on a variety of complex and challenging legal matters.

The individual will have a broad range of accountabilities including:

  • The provision of advice with respect to proposed commercial strategies;

  • The negotiation and drafting of complex contracts (such as JOAs, transportation (and processing) agreements, construction and tie-in agreements and the like) and other documentation;

  • The resolution of legal and business problems encountered in the promotion of Shell's interests and the protection of its assets and reputation;

  • The provision of advice on legal aspects of Upstream joint ventures and project developments;

  • The identification of possible external affairs exposure or infringement of business principles;

  • The protection of Shell's rights and reputation in all commercial and contractual arrangements;

  • Acting as “integrator” of legal advice from in-house legal experts e.g. antitrust so that the business receives appropriately tailored and relevant legal advice and support.


Shell UK and Ireland Upstream Legal comprises a team of 10 in Aberdeen. The team covers a wide variety of work relating to Shell UK and Ireland’s Upstream business and legal obligations.

The individual will be based in Aberdeen and will report to the Managing Counsel Upstream UK and Ireland.

Main client is the Upstream UK and Ireland business. Other areas of interaction will be: Finance, External Relations; Treasury and Remuneration, HR Services.


What we need from you?

You will demonstrate the following experience, skills and attributes:


  • An English or Scots-law qualified solicitor with a proven track record at a leading law firm and ideally some in-house experience. This is a role which would suit someone with approximately 2 to 4 years PQE or equivalent experience of UKCS oil & gas, corporate, contract and commercial law. However, candidates with a different experience profile who meet the requirements of the role will be considered.

  • Formidable academic record and excellent knowledge of UKCS oil & gas, corporate, contract and commercial law together with a willingness to be involved in other areas of work outside of the immediate role.

  • Experience of providing advice on a full range of UKCS oil & gas corporate and commercial transactions and corporate governance matters.


  • Excellent communication, negotiating, influencing and legal drafting skills.

  • Ability to clearly explain legal risks and to offer sound legal and commercial solutions within acceptable legal and risk frameworks.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, an ambitious, commercial approach and a commitment to excellence combined with the ability to translate commercial imperatives into practical solutions.


  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team to provide robust and comprehensive advice to stakeholders.

  • Confident and credible with an aptitude for rapidly building and maintaining trust with a strong network of contacts within Legal and with key stakeholders at all levels.

  • Display initiative, flexibility and personal integrity and a strong sense of accountability.

  • Strong personal drive and the ability to maintain resilience when managing a varied workload often under pressure with minimum supervision in a complex, demanding, volatile and changing environment.

  • Continuous improvement mindset i.e. "improving the work is the work".
