Main Purpose of Job
Provide legal administrative support and paralegal duties to the Office of Attorney General at the Carroll County Department of Social Services (CCDSS). Exercise independent responsibility, analyze information and make recommendations to Supervising Attorney. This includes case organization and file management, maintain and updating law library reference materials, creating and maintaining database of information through investigation and/or discovery, and assisting attorneys with legal assignments, enabling them to provide advice and legal counsel to clients; providing administrative support to the Supervising Attorney and other attorneys within the division when necessary in order to meet the requirements and goals of the office.
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three years of experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney.
Thirty credit hours or a certificate in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.
Thirty credit hours from an accredited law school may be substituted for the required experience.
Additional years of experience as stated above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in paralegal specialist classifications or paralegal specialist specialty codes in the legal and kindred field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience drafting proposed magistrate's recommendations and proposed court orders, guardianship and termination of parental rights petitions.
Experience coordinating the service of petitions and subpoenas.
Experience assisting attorney with preparation for hearings and trials.
Experience drafting correspondence, conducting legal research, tracking and review of documents, assist at meetings and general clerical and administrative support.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
