Unit Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Director of Intellectual Property, the Intellectual Property Associate will provide support for the work of the Intellectual Property (IP) department. Draft and issue all author contracts, amendments, and cancellations on behalf of the Press. Check Press contracts for books and journals, and assist in the sale of English-language subsidiary rights in Press publications to co-publishers, reprint publishers, book clubs, and other licensees. Drafts and issues all out-going license agreements or works with licensees to prepare agreements. Acts as a liaison to other Press departments to help manage the publishing process, especially consulting on permission issues. Serves as a liaison to publishers, agents, authors, and the general public regarding Press IP. Oversees the acquisition of electronic rights for backlist Press publications. Supervises a student Rights Assistant and the registration of all Press publications with the US Library of Congress Copyright Office. Analyzes publication agreements and assesses rights held by the Press in order to make independent decisions regarding future use of Press IP. Checks and edits copyright notices pre-publication. Manages expired licenses and extensions. Additional office and clerical functions as needed.
Bachelor's degree required.
At least two years of relevant experience required. At least one year of professional experience using Microsoft Word and Excel required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Excellent command of written English required. Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style required. Strong proofreading skills required. Strong organizational skills required. Ability to handle large number of documents and projects with high accuracy and attention to detail required. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines required. Ability to focus on complex material for lengthy periods each day required. Courtesy and tact in dealing with authors and licensees required. Ability to work independently and as part of a team required. Interpersonal skills required. Analytical skills required. Decision-making skills required. Attention to detail required. Proficiency with computers required. Strong word processing and spreadsheet skills required. Knowledge of Microsoft Word required. Experience and proficiency with databases preferred. Facility with scholarly content and communications preferred. Familiarity with contracts or copyright law preferred. Fluency in a foreign language, especially French or Spanish preferred.
