Unit Job Summary

The University of Chicago Law School's Edwin F. Mandel Legal Aid Clinic (Clinic) seeks an energetic professional to provide legal and administrative support to a group of Clinical Law Professors/attorneys and their law students in their representation of indigent clients. The Clinic teaches and trains law students to serve as advocates for people typically denied access to justice, provides legal assistance to indigent clients in state and federal court, and works to reform the legal system to better respond to the interests of the poor. This key staff member will have the following responsibilities and qualifications:


  • Providing support for legal work, including but not limited to: preparing and filing legal documents in civil and criminal cases in state and federal courts, including electronic filings; maintaining electronic and paper case files and databases; managing civil and criminal discovery; communicating in writing and orally with supervising attorneys, students, clients, witnesses, court personnel, and other attorneys; handling legal correspondence; searching electronic docket sheets; issuing subpoenas and record requests; coordinating meetings.

  • Organizing and coordinating logistics for workshops, conferences, and events, including the intensive trial practice workshop.

  • Providing support for faculty teaching responsibilities, including but not limited to: preparing course materials and uploading them onto teaching technology website; preparing and mail merging recommendation letters.

  • Preparing expense reimbursements.

  • Coordinating and arranging travel.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum of a high school diploma with three years of administrative assistant experience required, preferably in a legal setting; Bachelor's degree strongly preferred.


Preferred experience: Experience working in a law-related context; Experience working as a legal secretary, in a paralegal capacity, or providing high-level clerical support; Experience managing multiple assignments for multiple supervisors.


Superior computer, database, and Internet skill; Experience with Excel, Outlook/other email applications, Adobe, trial software, and time-tracking applications preferred; Excellent communications, interpersonal, organizational, writing, and proofreading skills required; Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing; Ability to work closely and effectively with multiple supervising attorneys and students; Ability to take ownership of projects, take initiative, and manage diverse tasks efficiently and independently; Ability to handle confidential information with absolute discretion; Strong work ethic, strong problem-solving skills, sound judgment; Efficiency, persistence, creativity, attention to detail.
