This position is located in the Appellate Staff, Civil Division, U.S. Department of Justice. The Appellate Staff handles appeals involving all of the subject-matter areas litigated by the Civil Division, including appeals arising out of civil cases handled by the United States Attorneys nationwide. Appellate Staff attorneys practice in all thirteen of the federal courts of appeals, as well as in the United States Supreme Court. As a Paralegal Specialist GS - 0950 - 7 , your typical work assignments may include the following:
- Reviewing appellate briefs and other legal pleadings in complex appellate litigation.
- Proofreading documents and reviews text for grammatical correctness.
- Verifies citations and legal references in prepared documents.
- Identifying relevant pleadings and documents requested by attorneys.
- Preparing and distributes recurring reports on case activities.
- Performing basic and legal research for attorney-assigned topics.
- Generating appropriate tables of contents and tables of authorities.
- Ensuring compliance with legal citation requirements.
- Utilizing various electronic means to track, update, and report documents for the courts, etc.

To qualify for the GS-7: you must have 52 weeks (one year) of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-5 Federal grade level. This experience includes cite-checking legal briefs, such as appellate briefs, motions for summary judgment, or motions to dismiss, and preparing such documents for filing in accordance with court rules; preparing and distributing reports on case activity; generates tables of content and tables of authorities; and searches legal reference files for information.
1 full year of graduate level education (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours) or superior academic achievement (S.A.A.). In order to be creditable under the SAA provision, your degree must be related to the position. S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.
Class standing-- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of: a. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better)as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or b. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better)based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
- Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society-Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies.
