The responsibilities of this attorney will involve developing, implementing and monitoring J&J’s global IP policy positioning and identifying and reporting on IP policies, trends, and positions being taken by governments, opinion leaders, UN Agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs), etc. that could affect J&J’s IP positioning and/or J&J’s global businesses. The attorney will also be expected to work with all J&J stakeholders in developing strategies designed to address the identified IP policies, trends and positions. The position will report to the Chief Intellectual Property Counsel responsible for the Global IP legal team. The candidate will work closely with the Chief IP Counsel and his leadership team with key business leaders at all levels on IP policy matters. The successful candidate will provide a full range of legal and policy analysis concerning IP laws, pending legislation and IP policy issues and advise the Legal Department, key business leaders, GA&P leaders, Global Public Health leaders and other J&J stakeholders with an interest in IP policy issues.

The candidate will have strong people and networking skills, well developed organizational skills and a good track record of identifying, assessing and helping people understand IP policy issues developing in a fast-changing external environment. Possessing a proven ability to work with diverse management teams and deliver counsel in a manner that promotes trust, teamwork and inspires confidence, is critical.

The candidate must be comfortable working within a matrix structure and have a sound understanding of the need to provide information to and involve subject-matter experts. The position will require a broad-based knowledge in the areas of IP law, health care issues, and how to work with 3rd party alliances, industry groups, governmental agencies, UN Agencies, NGOs etc. The candidate will have a strong drive for results and an established track record of delivery.

This role requires excellent collaborative skills, including the ability to coordinate with J&J attorneys, external counsel, functional leaders and other advisors, coordinate with stakeholders, not only within the IP and GA&P departments, but more broadly across the J&J enterprise (including global colleagues as the need arises) and provide strong Credo-based leadership. This necessitates a strong communicator with good inter-personal skills and a keen ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization.

Additional Requirements include:

  • Demonstrated competency and comfort counseling senior executives and leaders on a diverse range of IP policy matters;

  • Knowledge and experience of the Healthcare Industry;

  • Legal and policy exposure to the areas of trade regulation and IP litigation would be useful;

  • Experience working at a policy advisory level providing advice and inputs on global strategy will be highly valued;

  • Knowledge of healthcare economics will be useful to understand the evolving markets;

  • Project management capability where he/she has successfully led a cross functional team;

  • Sound business judgment with an ability to pro-actively engage with business colleagues to find practical solutions and partner with them to implement desired action plans;

  • Solid organizational skills and constructive mindset with a willingness to contribute and help others.


  • The position requires a Juris Doctor degree from a nationally recognized law school.

  • It is essential that all bar admissions are in good standing.

  • Requires a general understanding of IP law, particularly patent law, and an expert understanding of global IP policy issues.

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience at a top-tier, major market law firm, or in-house legal department of a multinational corporation or equivalent IP policy experience is required.

  • Superior ability to analyze and explain current or proposed IP laws and their policy implications and strong writing skills are a prerequisite.

  • Proven ability as a lead policy advocate with direct hands-on experience in important policy issues is also preferred.
