Center for Safety & Change Director of Legal Services in New City, New York

Center for Safety & Change is currently seeking a full-time 35-hours per week Director of Legal Services to be responsible for the overall leadership, planning and management of the professional activities comprising the legal program for the Mary Weingard Domestic Violence Law Project at the Center for Safety & Change. This is an administrative and direct service position that requires the ability to interpret the law with an understanding of litigation, victim advocacy, civil proceedings, police procedures and criminal justice related to domestic violence. Some Responsibilities Include: Provide supervision, oversight, professional support and direction to the staff attorney and legal advocates. Provide initial legal consultations to domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking victims. Advise clients concerning their legal rights and obligations.
Represent clients in legal proceedings and civil litigations such as orders of protection, custody, visitation, support and Article 10 cases. Draw up legal documentations, manage and/or advise clients on legal transactions. Prepare V.A.W.A applications on behalf of immigrant victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or human trafficking. Supervise and regularly meet with advocates to discuss legal issues arising from advocacy given through court-accompaniment program. Plan and implement pro-bono matrimonial training provided to local attorneys, who represent victims of domestic violence/ sexual assault and human trafficking in divorce cases. Plan and implement trainings provided to local attorneys, who represent victims of domestic violence/ sexual assault and human trafficking in civil and criminal court cases in conjunction with the Rockland Bar Association and Rockland Women's Bar Association. Attend organizational community meetings, which deal with coordinated response to violence, represent the agency at these meetings and pertaining to domestic violence in the community. Provide consultation and legal assistance regarding issues of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking to local attorneys, governmental agencies and local organizations in the community. Develop outreach strategies and materials. Work in collaboration with key individuals within the agency to create and/or update appropriate forms, policies, procedures and reports.
Position Requirements: Admission to the New York State Bar a must. J.D. with 3+ years of experience working with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and/or crime in a multidisciplinary setting preferred. Interpret laws, rulings and regulations for individuals and the agency. Analyze the probable outcomes of cases, using knowledge of legal precedents. Ability to present and summarize cases to judges and juries. Evaluate findings and develop strategies and arguments in preparation for presentation of cases. Must have strong organizational skills. Possess strong communication skills (both oral and written). Bilingual candidates preferred.
