The Northern District of California is one of the largest U.S. Attorney's Offices in the country with 133 attorneys located in the three-staffed offices: San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. The Office prosecutes federal crimes, defends, and pursues the interest of the United States in civil cases. The office is responsible for representing the federal government in virtually all litigation involving violations of federal law, civil lawsuits against the government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution of behalf of victims and taxpayers.
The district stretches from the Monterey Coast to California's northern border with Oregon, and from the Pacific Ocean nearly to Sacramento in the East. If selected for this position, you will support the Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by providing a variety of legal assistance and office support services.
Duties include the following:
Opening, examining, and maintaining hard copy and electronic files according to established procedures;
Examining, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, liens, claim forms, writs, etc;
Providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists;
Utilizing automated litigation support software to assemble exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents;
Entering data into appropriate database on a daily basis; ensuring data has been entered into automated database for accuracy;
Assembling and organizing files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository;
Maintaining calendar of assigned active cases;
Tracking filing, hearing, and trial dates, and scheduling conferences and interviews;
Arranging travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations; and
Producing a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

GS-5: To be eligible at the GS-5 level, you must have at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience.
Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal Service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: reviewing documents with legal implications for accuracy and completeness (e.g., court documents, real estate documents, contracts, insurance or benefits claims, mortgage or loan applications, tax forms, or other types of legal documents); typing and formatting correspondence and forms; maintaining file systems; and obtaining needed information from files or general reference sources.
Education: Completion of 4 years of education above High School. OR Combining Education and Experience: Applicants must possess a combination of post high school education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. For GS-5 level positions (except Clerk-Stenographer, which does not require specialized experience), only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
GS-6: To be eligible at the GS-6 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level.
Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: reviewing legal documents such as complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels for completeness of information; retrieving and assembling information for hearing and/or trial use; researching a variety of legal sources to obtain and/or verify information; and using automated software to produce legal related reports, documents, correspondence and related materials.
GS-7: To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level.
Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the Federal Service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing assistance to attorneys by preparing complaints, motions, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; and using automated software to produce legal related reports and documents, including developing tables of contents and indices to briefs.
To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
