The position is unclassified and serves at the will of the Appointing Authority.

The purpose of the class is to assist attorneys in preparing cases for trial and in preparing transactional work, such as contracts, deeds and easements. The class is responsible for research, discovery, documentation, and case management. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

Supervision: *Exercised:*Classification typically does not supervise. Received: Reports to all levels of Assistant City Attorney. Note: Other reporting relationships may apply.

Example of Duties:

The Office of the City Attorney is seeking a litigation paralegal with experience handling complex federal and state civil litigation cases in Virginia. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal, oral communication, and writing skills, and the ability to collect, research, analyze, and organize complex information.

Primary responsibilities will include file management, document review, initial drafting of discovery and motions, preparing correspondence, legal research, and scheduling. Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in e-discovery and legal research in complex civil litigation.

The successful candidate will have, at a minimum: (i) an Associate's degree or training equivalent to two years of college; (ii) two years of relevant experience (five or more years preferred); and (iii) proficiency with Microsoft Word Enterprise 8.1 or higher. A Paralegal certificate and Commission as a notary public are desired.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:

Requires an Associate's degree or training equivalent to two years of college.

Requires two years of relevant experience.

An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

Commission as a notary public is desirable.

Paralegal certificate is desirable.

Preferred Qualifications:

Proficiency with Microsoft Word and other programs in the Microsoft office suite, , state court litigation, and previous experience using a computer-based file management system in a law office.
