Position Highlights:

Under the direction of the Associate Vice President, Clinical Research Administration, the Grants & Contract Specialist reviews and negotiates all research related contracts. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring compliance with institutional and Office of Legal Affairs guidelines for contracting with research sponsors. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Negotiates agreements directly with contract research organizations, and industry sponsors.

  • Resolves complex contractual issues and legally binding terms.

  • Effectively identifies and negotiates contract language acceptable to Rush and Rush’s status as a non-profit academic medical center.

  • Works with intellectual property counsel and Tech Transfer Office in regard to intellectual property language in clinical trial agreements (“CTAs”).

  • Drafts and provides initial legal review of research related contracts and other relevant documents, including but not limited to the following types: clinical trial agreements (“CTAs”), confidentiality disclosure agreements (“CDAs”), independent contractor agreements (“ICAs”), service agreements, business associate agreements, and subcontracts; particularly with respect to compliance with government, sponsor, and institutional policies.

  • Issues final legal approval on all research related contracts and ensures contracts are ready for signature by institution’s authorized signatory.

  • Monitors research-related business problems.

  • Acts as a main point of contact for principal investigators and study teams on all research related contracts and provides regular updates to study coordinators as requested.

  • Advises, assists, and trains faculty and staff to ensure compliance with institutional policy and federal regulations related to contracting for research.

  • Develops Rush contract templates for various types of CDAs, CTAs, and other research related agreements.

  • Maintains a library of pre-approved form documents, contract clauses, templates, historical documents, and adds or revises material as needed.

  • Drafts and develops policies, and standard operating procedures related to contract submission for the Office of Research Affairs.

  • Monitors contracting turnaround times with a focus on streamlining the review process.

  • Provides monthly metrics on all contracts submitted to Office of Research Affairs.

  • Maintains up-to-date status for all contracts submitted in the Rush Research Portal.

  • Develops and conducts educational workshops on related policy and procedures.

  • Other relevant duties and projects as assigned.

Position Qualifications Include :

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field required, Juris Doctorate preferred.

  • Three or more years of related legal experience required.

  • Experience with contracts and form agreements required.

  • Experience drafting legal documents required.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and appropriately seek guidance from Counsel when necessary.

  • Ability to aptly assess potential legal risks or exposure.

  • MS Office and general technology proficiency.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and produce exceptional work under deadlines.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Detail oriented.
